Uruguay may
be the most secularised nation in Latin America with the highest
percentage of atheists and agnostics. More than 90% of its people
are of European origin. There is a large middle class. Spanish is
spoken by virtually everyone. In the midst of secularism and unbelief,
there is a rising interest in the transcendent, often focused on
false religious systems including the occult and New Age teachings.
At the same time, some evangelical groups are finding that this
new spiritual openness gives them opportunities to share Christ
as never before.
Christianity
has had less impact in Uruguay than in any other country in the
Americas. Eastern Montevideo is the fastest growing area of the
country, and its middle-class neighbourhoods have hardly been touched
with the gospel. It is in these neighbourhoods that SIM missionaries
are establishing a cell-church ministry. Marriage Encounter retreats,
literature distribution, and friendship evangelism are all being
employed as means to share Christ with this audience.
SIM missionaries
are also freely helping existing churches and their pastors in every
way possible, such as offering cell group training, organizing inter-church
evangelistic outreaches, and providing tools for evangelism and
discipleship.
Please pray
for:
- Those who
see the bankruptcy of secularism to come in contact with the truth
of Christianity.
- Missionaries
to discover appropriate ways of penetrating the culture with the
gospel.
- Churches
to work together in reaching the nation for Christ.
- Spiritism
and occultism to be defeated by the power of the Holy Spirit.
