Sudan, the
largest country in Africa, has been declared an Islamic state.
The Muslim government in the North has declared a jihad, or holy
war, against the South, which is primarily Christian and/or animist.
With the discovery and subsequent sale of oil pumped from areas
located in Southern Sudan, the civil war increasingly has had more
to do with the control of valuable resources than religious issues.
These oil revenues have also complicated the resolution of this
war. About two million people have died in the civil war which has
raged intermittently in the country for many years, or in famines
caused by the war.
SIM works with
the Sudan Interior Church (SIC) which grew out of the missionary
work of SIM. As people have fled the fighting in the South, they
have established new churches in the areas where they have subsequently
settled. SIC has continued to grow numerically but has a serious
shortage of biblically trained and discipled lay leadership, particularly
in areas located outside of Khartoum. The church has participated
with SIM in emergency relief, theological training of pastors and
evangelists and in the translation of Scriptures into the mother
languages of the two largest people groups within SIC.
SIM missionaries
are involved in such ministries as Bible translation, literacy,
work with street children, refugee relief, university student work,
equipping church leaders, and the Khartoum International Church.
They are operating a bookshop for the churches and seeking to encourage
the church and its people. They also provide relief, rehabilitation,
and development work with war victims, as well as outreach to urban
youth and children. Gideon Theological College is a key ministry
for equipping church leaders, offering training in both English
and Arabic.
Please pray
for:
- An end to
the North-South war and its atrocities.
- Completion
of the Old Testament translation in the two major tribal languages
of SIC.
- Spiritual
renewal and the healing of fractured relationships in the church.
- Resolution
of dependency issues related to funds sent from outside the country.
- A strong
commitment on the part of SIC leadership to ensure that righteousness
prevails and that God's name is glorified in all that the church
does.
