Sénégal
was France's earliest and most favoured colony in West Africa,
remaining under French control for 300 years. Some of the Sénégalese
were converted to Islam in the 11th century, and at least 90% of
them are Muslims, but there is tolerance for other religions. About
45% of the people are members of the Wolof tribal group, and more
than 80% of the people of Sénégal speak the Wolof
language.
It was to reach
the Wolof that International Christian Fellowship (ICF), which later
merged with SIM, entered Sénégal in 1984. SIM missionaries
are engaged in friendship evangelism, Bible studies, literature
and tape distribution, literacy, computer training, and teaching
English as a Second Language. Their goal is to plant churches, and
they are praying for more missionaries (at least 20 families) to
help these efforts. Ministries to the Wolof, thus far, have resulted
in a small number of converts only among young people.
Please pray
for:
- More evangelistic
workers.
- The Sénégalese
churches to be Christ-centred, growing and maturing spiritually
and mission focused.
- The completion
of the Wolof Old Testament, and its distribution.
- Religious
tolerance to continue and for hearts to be open to the gospel.
- The Christian
radio broadcasts, "Way of Righteousness," that the Spirit
of God will open listeners' hearts to the truth.
