The modern
era of missions in Kenya began with the arrival of Johann Ludwig
Krapf (Chrishona pioneer) and his family in 1844. Two months later
his wife and child died of the fever. Except for Fort Jesus and
some remnant church buildings erected by the Portuguese, there were
no traces of the earlier Christian period (1498-1698 AD). In 1895
the Africa Inland Mission (AIM) began in Ukambani. Founder Peter
Cameron Scott died shortly after. The Africa Inland Church (AIC)
has grown out of the effort of the AIM. Today the AIC has more than
a million members and is the largest Protestant body in Kenya. SIM
entered Kenya in 1977 at the invitation of AIM, to establish a new
base in eastern Africa for work with Muslims.
Historically
the Muslims have demonstrated a strong resistance to the gospel.
SIM's desire is to provide a gospel witness and to encourage the
Muslim background believers (MBBs) as they mature in the Lord. This
effort is directed through various activities including one-on-one
discipleship, Bible studies, sports, educational ministries such
as teaching English as a second language, and community development
in agriculture, water, and health. While MBBs worship in established
churches and gather for Bible studies, they are moving to establish
their own expression of worship.
Through the
years as the Lord gave opportunity, new ministries began. Life Challenge
Africa (LCA) is a resource and development service that promotes
Muslim evangelism through training seminars and resource materials.
The aim is to provide sensitive and understandable models for reaching
Muslims. Staff members work with church groups, individuals, and
para-church organizations. Through partnership, leadership development
and networking in the Urban Ministries Support Group (UMSG), SIM
and others give training and seek to stimulate awareness among Christians
and churches for the needs and challenges of the growing cities
of Africa.
SIM has staff
working with the Africa Inland Church in the Bible Education by
Extension and the Christian Education programs. SIM is also involved
in planting churches among the Daasanach, an animistic tribe of
agro-pastoralists.
Please pray
for:
- Mature, well-equipped,
and humble leaders for the Church.
- Churches
to catch a vision for reaching Muslims.
- Strategic
wisdom in helping to meet human need and relieve suffering.
- Expanded
opportunities to reach out to Muslims.
- The Lord
to guide the Muslim-background believers (MBBs) in their corporate
worship.
- Continuing
helpful relationships with AIM and other partner ministries.
- The gospel
to truly break down tribalism and power seeking.
- A growing
church among the Daasanach, with a good leadership training program.
- God's guidance
regarding possible new efforts to provide a gospel witness among
unreached people groups.
