SIM, through
its merger with Andes Evangelical Mission (AEM), is an acknowledged
pioneer in evangelical missions in Bolivia. This nation has long
been dominated by colonially-imposed traditional religion on top
of pervasive spiritism-a syncretism that keeps the people in spiritual
darkness. The countryside is dotted with shrines to spirits to whom
sacrifices are still regularly made. Nearly 10% of the population
of Bolivia are now identified as evangelical. SIM's related church,
known as the Union Cristiana Evangelica (UCE), is blessed with growing
leaders and maturing vision.
It was the vision
of the "vast Andes regions ringing with praises to the Lord"
that drew the founders of AEM to Bolivia, and specifically to the
millions of Quechuas who live in the highlands. SIM's ministries,
whether evangelism, education, leadership development, theological
training, medical, or media--all are still driven by this vision.
In 1999 Quechua Radio went on air. This is an important tool in
sending the gospel out to the farthest reaches of the Quechua people
spread across the Andes. SIM also has a significant ministry in
printed media.
There's a need
for called and committed Bolivian teachers to be trained to be tentmaker
missionary teachers in unreached Quechua communities. The church
and mission also have a vision for missionaries from the church
to be sent out to neighbouring countries and outside the South American
continent. They are pursuing a strategic program of mission mobilization
and training. (Already one family has been sent to an impoverished
country in Africa where open witness is banned and there are only
25 trained pastors.)
Please pray
for:
- The millions
of Quechua now within reach of the gospel through radio, that
they will have their hearts opened by the Holy Spirit to become
true followers of Jesus. (Most are described as "Christo-pagans,"
and have been indifferent to the gospel.)
- Revival,
both in the mission and the church.
- Continuing
healthy relationship between mission and church, resulting in
strategic partnering for the gospel.
- Bolivian
missionaries being called to serve cross-culturally.
- People of
all ages in the churches to be true disciples of Jesus.
- Development
of godly leaders equipped to nurture the growing churches; several
Bible Institutes, one Seminary, and many TEE centres.
- God's blessing
on the Carachipampa Christian School, which not only provides
education for missionary children but also serves as an outreach
to Bolivian families.
