Founded in 1889 now working in over 40 countries in the world

In 1893 ...

Walter Gowans and Rowland Bingham of Canada and Thomas Kent of the U.S. landed in Nigeria intent to evangelize the 'Soudan' region of Africa. Though Gowans and Kent died of malaria, Bingham persisted and established a base in Nigeria in 1902

At the same time a
Scotsman began work on
the Island of Ceylon; two
Australians established a
base in India; and New
Zealanders, George and
Mary Allan, reached
Bolivia. After decades of
independent success, the
 four groups decided to
merge in the 1980's to form
 an International ministry
 now called SIM.

SIM's History in Southern Africa

Prior to the merger with SIM in 1998, the Africa Evangelical Fellowship (AEF), through its predecessor organisations, traced its history in South Africa back to 1889 when outreach ministries commenced in Cape Town. Later, outreach started in other parts of South Africa through both foreign and South African missionaries. As the work grew, a Sending Office (as opposed to the existing Field Office) was started to concentrate on recruitment for these ministries and those in neighbouring countries into which AEF had entered.

Having started overseas, SIM opened a sending office in South Africa in 1945. Outreach ministries in South Africa under SIM only commenced in the 1980s to peoples among whom no other organisation was already working.
The merger at international level between SIM and AEF widened the scope of all the ministries of both organisations and continues to strengthen the missionary sending base from South Africa to other parts of SIM's world.
